The Number 23

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

Okay, some of you may know a bit about my strange connection with the number 23, but I thought I’d just run through some of the amazingly creepy ways in which this very mystical number pops up in my life.

I was born on 6/23, (the number 6 is also very significant for me, 623 being strongest).

6=2*3

2/3=.66666666…

23 is the first prime number made up of two prime numbers. I am the first child in my family, and my parents were both the first children in their family

My name is made up of 20 letters in 3 words

My last name starts with W, the 23rd letter of the alphabet

W has 2 down points and 3 up

W is the only letter in the English language to be pronounced polysyllabically. It is a double(2)-u and it has 3 syllables.

The last four digits of my incredibly random cell phone number add up to 23

The first three add up to 16

That means my cell phone number, put together, is 1623

The address of the house I grew up in was 3488. 3+4+8+8=23

When I was a kid I collected basketball cards fanatically. Michael Jordan, the most famous basketball player of all time, and whose rookie card is the holy grail of basketball card collectors, wore the number 23

When I was a kid I played soccer for almost a decade. David Beckham, the most famous footballer in the world, wears number 23

The only thing I remember from chemistry class in high school is that a mole contains 6×10^23 atoms

My favorite band in high school was 311 (1+1, 3)

I was 23 in 2003

I graduated from college in 2003

My room number sophomore year was 323  (C.W.!)

My area code at home is 626 (6,2,3*2)

My favorite car (one I will be buying soon) is the Scion tC. T is the 20th letter of the alphabet, C is the 3rd

My current favorite television show, Lost, talks at length about a mystical string of numbers that supposedly bring doom upon those who use them. They are: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

Note 16 and 23 next to each other

My mother was born on 2/4/42

My mother gave me 23 chromosomes

I watch Lost with my mother

Though Lost is my current fascination, my all time favorite tv show is the West Wing (W.W.)

When I get take-out, I am Order #23 more often than any other number by a significant margin

I am an avid (perhaps psychotically so) movie watcher. Watch a movie. Any movie. Look for a number. I guarantee it will be 23

I have gambled not more than 6 times in my life. The second time I ever played in Vegas, I walked up to a table and put $20 down on a Blackjack hand. I got an 18 (6*3) and won, when the dealer busted with 23. I walked away with my winnings then and there.

The third time I ever gambled, I put $5 down on red at the roulette wheel. The ball landed on 23. I again walked away with my winnings.

To reiterate, that was the second and third time I’ve ever gambled

Since then I’ve always won on the first hand/play, and lost every after (not kidding)

For some reason, I memorized pi as 3.14159. I don’t know when that happened or why, nor do I have any idea what comes next in the series. I just know that pi is 3.14159. Go ahead. Add those numbers together.

There are just too many instances to describe here, from favorite architectural landmarks to membership numbers to my locker number in high school. These occurrences might seem creepy or wrong, but I have come to appreciate them greatly. I know that no matter where I go or what I do, I will have this common thread connecting all the disjointed and seemingly unrelated coincidences in my life. 23 is my datum.
